Basically, a man was shot by the police because he had a loaded gun in his possession and was killed: they first claimed he was shooting at them, but now with post mortem it appears he wasn't. The gangsters he was with were upset by this so  burned down a shop and a car.

Then everyone in London started rioting too, and now everyone in the rest of the country is doing it. Most of what you see on TV is not motivated by the shooting, they just want new trainers and a free TV. They know they can get away with it because our police has come under criticism in the past few years for being heavy-handed with protesters so are scared to act strongly. This and also the police chief recently resigned over News Of The World phone hacking allegations: so no one in charge knows how to handle the situation properly.

What the hell ... The police should be ashamed.
Is as bad news. Hope soon London is the same as it was before;)

The police should be doing more yes, but the way the public have acted in the past have resulted in them being tied up in litigation.

For example there was public outrage at the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes around the time of the 7/7 attacks. I believe killing him was wrong in hindsight, but given the state of emergency in the UK it was wholly understandable that when a man is running from police in a busy tube station it was a justifiable action.

Despite this, the public still seems to litigate and get outraged as if it's possible to control violent criminals at the same time as not affecting innocent people.

I think to call for the police to take stronger action we must first stay at home and be prepared to accept that innocent people may get caught up in the controlling of rioters.
