New GPU to replace my 8800Gt 512Mb
« on: April 28, 2010, 10:53:59 am »
I think i am going to upgrade my GPU soon from my EVGA 8800GT 512mb and thought this looks alright:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/194707
(It's a ASUS HD 5770 Cu Core 1GB GDDR5 DVI VGA HDMI Out PCI-E Graphics Card)

What do you think? I don't really want to spend more than £150. Rest of my specs are:

E8200, Corsair 4GB RAM, W7Pro64

Sadly, they don't really work. I have a friend who works at www.edenfx.com and they've got loads of this and he says it's crap. :(

Sorry to be a bore and bring it back on topic, but is that card ok, or should i get a better one? Are ATI's generally better performance for your money nowadays that nVidia?

It peforms slightly slower than the 4870 and gtx 260. I assume dx11 is a factor? If so it's a nice choice, cool, efficient and performs well. I would go for a 5770 over a 4870 or gtx 260.

Plus if you have a capable mobo to go at least pci-e 2.0 x8 on two lanes you can crossfire it with another 5770 somewhere down the line (PSU too), making it peform better than a 5850 and pretty damn close/equal (sometimes) to the 5870 at a lower cost (5850 is roughly £5 cheaper, but isn't as fast). If you wanted that performance though, I would personally prefer to go with a single card solution. But that would mean a 5870 which is ~£60 dearer than a pair of 5770's. For crossfire a fast CPU may be needed to limit any bottleneck occuring, as for the power supply a decent 600W PSU should be enough.

I take it you chose the Asus because of the non reference fan? Well, the 5770 reference runs decently cool already and unless you plan to oc it a bit you might as well go for a cheaper one, but your choice.

XFX + AVP only £2 cheaper though  :P

5770 ≤ 4870/GTX260 - Peforms close.
CF5770 ≤ 5870 - Performs extremely close, sometimes even beating it, albeit one or two titles. 5870 is ~£60 dearer.

-.- ATI FireGL and Nvidia Quadro are for designers, architechs, medical programs, etc.  and IT WORKS!!!! and very well, dont say that they are shit/crap cards ... indeed they're too expensive until 1000-1500 dlls.

I hope that u can handle a CAD program with videogame card :( its sad...  when i tried/test a Quadro fx 3800 in an arch's office like 3 years ago... only GoogleSketchup got better performance, an anothers like archicad, solid works, revit... OMG they worked like a GTX295 OV running NFS 3 on PC...

:'( these cards works on different frec.     :'(  i need a Quadro FX 5800

BTW SIMON..

Nvidia has better quality on images, transparency, smooth images.... ATI has a lot of brute force or high speed but no quality

with a E8200 i dont believe that u will get a good performance...
What is model of ur motherboard? does your actually mobo has sli/crossfire???
