More GPU help!
« on: April 30, 2012, 04:00:22 pm »
Still haven't bought a new computer, and now the store that I get my parts from got some new GPU's in.

Basically I wanted to get a 6870, but that is no longer an option. So..

My options now are basically GTX 560 or a 7850. They differ in price by about $100, so is it worth spending the extra money for the newer one?

Give me some guidance please!

Also, this is the price list, GPUs are in the middle column at the middle of the page. Feel free to recommend other shit I should get from there. Thanks!

7850 is faster than 560(not TI) and newer and cheaper.
you can probably unlock it to 7870 too

http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-radeon-hd-7850-and-7870-review/ as you can see, it kicks ass for the price

With the GCN architecture AMD has proven itself to deliver a mature and great performing series of GPUs. The 7900 was received positive, we think the 7700 series is okay (albeit too expensive), the 7800 series however surprises me the best in every forseeable way.
The entire 28nm chip stack has now been filled and both the Radeon HD 7850 and 7870 are graphics cards that pack a serious amount of performance. The reality is that the Radeon HD 7850 is actually positioned against the GeForce GTX 560 Ti, but it is battling with the GeForce GTX 570 easily just as well. The Radeon HD 7870 on it's end riding the GTX 580's "toosh" all the time and for mid-range targeted cards, that shows a lot of performance. That said you should also realize that the cards tested today are reference sample. AMD's partners will start selling factory faster clocked models as well, so the performance bracket for these cards to operate in can still rise another 10% easily.
The performance is good, the features very nice, the power consumption is fantastic and the heat and noise levels are a non-issue (though we do not have numbers on the smaller PCB and cooler version of the 7850 ). Now if the end-user prices will be fair (drop a little further) and at the level as earlier reported then the R7800 series is going to be a success. We'd recommend the R7850 to the casual and enthusiast gamers with a monitor resolution of 1920x1080/1200. The R7870 is obviously for the ones that demand a little more performance and have a need for tweaking and overclocking.

Might be stupid question but what size is your monitor cause those cards are worth only in case if you are about to play at 1920x1080/1200
Also keep on mind GPU is not all what makes games,if you have some old processor 2 core or similar there is no point spending 200-300 euro on high end models cause performance will be worse 20-60% than you see on test what Karlis attached

I'm looking at getting an i5-2500k processor, 8GB RAM and a 24" monitor.

i5-2500K is fine, it scales almost as good as the top i7's does.

7850 will perfectly match there  ;)

Actually, I'm not sure if the motherboard i chose is USB 3.0 compatible. (Gigabyte Z68MA-D2H-B3)

If not, what's a similar one from the price list in my first post?

Chipset:
Up to 12 USB 2.0/1.1 ports (4 on the back panel, 8 via the USB brackets connected to the internal USB headers)
Etron EJ168 chip:
Up to 2 USB 3.0/2.0 ports on the back panel

What is wrong with it? If you watch from neutral point of view only thing that ati is having worse than nvidia is bit more trouble with drivers( still the problems are very specialized and unlikely to be hit into ), apart from that ati is leading if your not looking at very high end.

Yeah I don't think I will spend an extra 50+ for a 570.

Thanks again for all the help!

Ok so I went to order the PC today but they don't have the motherboard or processor (new version is out and they aren't getting anymore in).

I've looked at some benchmarks and the i5 3550 seems like a good way to go? I'm not really sure.

As for motherboards, I really have no idea. The dude said the GB H/Z77 are the new models and going by price, the Z77MX-D3H appears to be the best one. Can you guys recomomend one similar to the one I listed earlier from the price list in the first post?

all 3xxx series that are not 39xx are Ivy Bridge, the new ones.
In case you want to overclock, pick Sandy Bridge (2xxx) for sure.
If you're not going to overclock it:
2500K is still best performance/price and much lower temperature, but 3xxx series have lower power consumption, +5-9% performance, and support for higher ram speeds, native USB 3.0 and pci-e 3.0, much faster QuickSync, and 60-100% faster integrated graphics ( not that its important for you i guess ).

I think you should watch at other shops, because intel haven't stopped production of 2500K as of now, and they should still be in the shops.

For the motherboard, if you're getting the 3xxx series, check this table and pick one that has all features that you need:

If not, then same motherboard type as you originally planned.

All depends on your needs.

EDIT:
watched some specs, if your going with 3xxx series, i5-3550 is indeed a good deal, but it might be worth it going for i5-3570K, as its +100mhz and unlocked just for ~+15$. moderate overclock could still be aplied (+~300mhz) easily, if having a decent air cooler. As long as overclock didn't burn the cpu (impossible with these clocks), warranty shouldn't be voided, but need jalicano's word on this tho.

from old series 2500K remains best usually, but 100mhz for 10$ ( i5-2550K) is still worth considering, if you're out of the overclocking.
