Because the longer triangle when it's moved on top, stretches out the 2 irregular components that are below it more than the small one does when that's on top, therefore there is a block of space left? The area of actual space that all the components actually take up is still the same, it's just spaced out more. Looking at it for quite a while now and that's what I've come up with :L

because they are not the same, the one with missing square is not even a triangle its a quadrilateral figure....
