No, you don't rent games on Steam, you own them. For example you own a game on CD with CD-Key to activate it on GFWL, GFWL shutting down you cant play it anymore.... no you can activate this key on Steam and play it. Plus with new Steam Family Sharing you can share your games up to 10 trusted people and let them play games you own.

Loving the game and the free updates, for example lets compare two games Payday 2 and Borderlands 2 both are awesome games and both games got Halloween dlc's. In Borderlands 2 Gearbox Software made that you need to pay for it to get it (and its still isn't available for purchase in my region for some unknown reason and Halloween is over, thanks to a good friend who bought it for me) and it has only 2 missions and 1 secret boss, in Payday 2 Overkill Software made Halloween dlc as free update for everyone who owns the game and it has: new Halloween heist (in normal, hard, very hard and overkill difficulty), new weapon, 4 new weapon modifications, 8 new masks, 6 new patterns, 4x mask inventory increase and 14 new achievements.
And one more awesome thing regarding dlc's (there is no dlc's at this time but there will be at least 5). If you have the dlc but your friend don't have it, he can still play in a dlc with you if you are the host, only thing will be locked for him are new weapons, upgrades and achievements that that comes with that dlc.
