Title: I'm buying a car
Post by: [MAF]Sighmoan on January 08, 2010, 02:50:54 pm
Any car owners got any tips on what to look out for?

Looking at insurance considering i live in central London with only on street parking i will be getting a 1.1 or less as my first car.

What are good and what aren't? Also, what should i ask and look out for when viewing cars?

You gonna buy it at the cardealer or second hand?

2nd hand. I am buying the smallest, weakest car possible to keep the insurance down.

What amount of money are you planing to spend on car buying ?

Anyway. Opel Corsa 1.2 is good if you want to have low paying for fuel and insurance. From newer cars hmm Hyundai Getz (it's also 1.2 or 1.4)

And ask how much fuel car will eat in city/highway. Of course if you don't care about comfort.  :D Ask something if you want to know.

Post by: [MAF]Sighmoan on January 08, 2010, 03:36:47 pm
Top whack i want to spend is £1000. For most 1.2 or less the insurance is about £700.

I've mainly been looking at Saxo's, Punto's, Micro's, Clios and Corsas.

As i know Fiat Punto is a bit expensive, isn't it ? And it is a small sports car that might eat more fuel that others. I think you should get Clio or Corsa.

You said:

Do you mean to buy, or do you mean the petrol cost due to mpg etc?

Being honest, I like the Punto, nice price range, sporty but not too sporty. I don't think there will be much different in price between the cars you mention.

Set a price range.
Check insurance prices.
Check mileage of the vehicle.
Check fuel usage of the vehicle.

I suggest you buy a motorcycle. A 125cc (I suggest Honda CBF125) is more than nimble enough to get you around traffic quickly. Only £10 (more or less) to fill the tank. And if you're worried about safety just pick up this (http://www.getgeared.co.uk/BOX_BX-1_Motorcycle_Helmet), this (http://www.getgeared.co.uk/VANUCCI_Leather_Motorcycle_Combi_Jacket), this (http://www.getgeared.co.uk/HELD_Gore-Tex_K2_Winter_Motorcycle_Gloves), this (http://www.getgeared.co.uk/PROBIKER_City_Motorcycle_Boots?sc=17&category=154), and maybe 2 of these (http://www.getgeared.co.uk/HIGHWAY_1_Buffalo_Leather_Motorcycle_Jeans_Mens) and you should be fine.

The total sum of everything might be more than twice your budget, but you'll get your money back via savings in fuel and maintenance. ;) Plus these type of bikes can survive a lot of beating, low-sides & minor crashes before they finally go to motorcycle-heaven, but you're getting insurance as well right? :L

Only Fiat 126p! >:(

Engine capacity was increased from 594 cc to 652 cc at the end of 1977 when the cylinder bore was increased from 73.5 to 77 mm. Claimed power output was unchanged at 23 PS (17 kW; 23 hp), but torque was increased from 39Nm (4.0 mkg) to 43Nm (4.4 mkg).

If this car break down you will repair it using hammer 8)

Don't bother forcing yourself to buy under a 1.1: your choices are pretty rubbish, and you don't get much of a saving on insurance anyway.

This is my Citroen C2, it's a 1.4 giving Group 3 (out of 20) so ticks all the boxes (but only has four seats) and despite modifications still has nice low premiums.

I ended up with a French car because I fell in love with it, but from a practical point of view, I'd aim for Japanese cars like the Yaris.

Better prices you find in UK, coz they have small car market ( cars with steering whell on right side :D ). For example for my VB ( from Germany) I paid 2700 E, and on the UK it cost 800-1000 Ł ( 900 - 1200 Euro ) lol :). Many peoples buy in UK cheap cars for parts, or they change the steering wheel in Poland :D. This gives them a pretty decent gains.

For Example Former Vauxhall :D. somebody done it wrong, and use dashboard parts before facelifting, rear wipe on the right side like i uk. the lock on right "passanger" side. 7000 PLN vs 14000 for vectra after 99'

Don't ever bid on eBay without seeing the car first.

I don't care if your grandma's  running the auction, and your max. bid is £5, it's still a bad move.

You could just get another bent MOT when it expires.

Remember: if the car is not exactly as described, you don't have to pay. But otherwise it's a legally binding contract.

He says he serviced it recently so check oil level and see how dirty it is. Check chassis for rust, exhaust for holes (either of these would be an MOT fail). Check for accident damage as he says it has been repainted.

Anyway, I wish you the best.

I've paid for a vehicle check and it all seems to match what he has said, plus he sent me the last 3 years MOTs and the vehicle registration. I've also contacted the garage that he had the services and MOT done at and again it matched what he said.

If i have bought a lemon i don't think he has set out to sting me.

£1k sounds a lot, but I know fuck all about vehicle prices, I hope repairs don't cost the earth (swa on irc you had a few problems)

It did have a problem, but it got fixed this morning and cost £60. All is well with the machine now.

£1k is a lot, but I wanted that model, and that's how much they cost. Everything so far has been within the budget I set myself, so it's all good.

Anyone here a bit handy with cars?

How do i go about fixing/treating a small patch on rust on the roof? It's only a line about the size of a match, but would love to get it fixed up before winter?

Also, anyone know how to fit a car stereo in a really old car that doesn't have a fancy choc block style plug?

It did have a problem, but it got fixed this morning and cost £60. All is well with the machine now.

What happened?

Also £1,000 is the going rate now because of the scrappage scheme: all the old cars have been taken off the market. Supply decreases, raising the price of a working car. 2 years ago you could probably buy this exact car for £250 because there were hundreds more like it around. n fact, the car would have been worth more as scrap (no offence Simon).

As for the rust: grind it back to the bare metal with some really rough sandpaper: remove ALL rust traces. If it's deep you may need a friend with an angle grinder. Prime it and paint it with a couple of coats (rattle can job should be alright because the car isn't exactly in showroom condition anyway :L).

For the stereo, you will have to work out which wire does what and solder a new style plug into the loom (use electrical shrinkwrap around the solder to make sure it doesn't get damaged over time). Shouldn't be very hard, but will probably take a while to do.

Stereo cables:

I've done some poking about and think:

100% sure the grey one is the aerial (I've traced the wire).
The ones with plugs on the end are the speakers (Do the cross over as maybe they have woofers and tweeters in them, and the tweeters are the ones joined together?).
The black one is connected to the cigarette lighter and i assume is earth.

The red one, since it attached to the ignition, is the ignition one, so where is the power one?

Close up of the where the cables connect:

Does it matter how coarse the sandpaper is that i get, i just want to fix the two posts on the roof:

For the filler, use a golf ball of filler to a pea of hardener. Sand down smooth, apply primer, sand down, apply second coat of primer, sand down, apply two coats of paint.

I thought i would give you all an update about what happened last week:

Last Thursday night I got home from a run to see the drivers door was slightly open. I thought that's odd as i definitely shut and locked it.

I get to the van and see that my steering wheel has been sawn through, steering cowling smashed to pieces and the ignition totally smashed out. Absolutely nothing was stolen from the glove box (a usb/cigarette lighter thing and a torch) and nothing in the back.

Stupid sods didn't even look in the back to see that the battery was missing (and the lid was removed so it was easily visible it was missing) as i removed in on Tuesday night to give it a charge (which i was going to do on the weekend).

The police came on Friday evening to finger print it to see if they can find a match on their records, although of course i am not holding my breath.

This morning someone can and fixed it up and drove it over to fix other bits and pieces, so that's another £350 spent on it (it needed £200 of repair solely due to the attempted theft).
