Title: Race distance!
Post by: MadMax on April 26, 2011, 02:45:29 pm: Many races have wrong distance, for example DoubleYou shows over 2 miles, while it have like 700 meters.
This way can help calculate distance a bit more accurate.

Red dots = checkpoints
Red lines = track
Yellow lines = distance between checkpoints
Green lines = X and Y distance between checkpoints

How?
Checking distance between 2nd grid and 1st cp

1008.788024 2557.533203 10.429699 54.668498
841.711914 2630.111572 11.824199
X distance: (1008.788024)-(841.711914)=(167.07611)
Y distance: (2557.533203)-(2630.111572)=(72.578369)
Z distance: (10.429699)-(11.824199)=(1.4115)
horizontal distance:
X distance²+Y distance²=horizontal distance²
167.07611²+72.578369²=
27914.4265327321+5267.619646700161=33182.046179010161
sqrt 33182.046179010161=182.15939772356012321577005465159

so horizontal distance = 182.15939772356012321577005465159 meters

now total distance:
horizontal distance²+Z distance²=total distance²
182.15939772356012321577005465159²+1.4115²=
33182,046179010161+1.99233225=33184.038511260161
sqrt 33184.038511260161=182.1648662922138808989957690671

so total distance between 2nd grid and 1st checkpoint = 182.1648662922138808989957690671

now do same to check total distance between 1st checkpoint and 2nd checkpoint
then same for total distance between 2nd checkpoint and 3rd checkpoint
then same for all other checkpoints

later sum up all total distances:
total distance between 2nd grid and 1st checkpoint (for example, as we counted 182.1648662922138808989957690671)
+total distance between 1st checkpoint and 2nd checkopint (for example let's say 230)
+total distance between 2nd checkpoint and 3rd checkpoint (for example let's say 138)
+same for rst checkpoints (for example let's say 2375)

then:
sum of all distances/1.609344=race distance in miles

182.1648662922138808989957690671+230+138+2375=2925.1648662922138808989957690671

2925.1648662922138808989957690671/1.609344=~1.8 mile

so total race distance is around 1.8 mile

I think I explained it enough, and hope You understand what I mean.
In short:
X distance²+Y distance²=horizontal distance²
horizontal distance²+Z distance²=total distance²
then same for all checkpoints
sum up all distances
sum of all distances/1.609344=race distance in miles
