It depends on the PS2 controller adapter. The better ones can tell how hard you are pressing the buttons (just like the PS2 can).

Also, cheaper adapters don't let you press up and down (on the D-Pad) at the same time, they will only register up OR down. I found this out when I was playing Stepmania.  :'(

It's a ps2 controller, you can't press up + down together anyway, can you? Mine's a rockfire adaptor, and it doesn't detect how hard I press buttons...

joypads give you lots more car control, and it makes vehicles have better grip

Depends what you're the most practised at. I used to race with keyboard, and became better than I am with joypads. Then, I got a joypad and sucked with it, so much that I stopped using it. Later, I decided to practise with it, and now I'm alot better with one. And about the better grip, I haven't noticed that, cars spin just as easily for me. Might depend on the type of joypad, cuz I have a ps2 one and it's exactly like keyboard, with a different layout.

actually it does give you so much more vehicle control because you are holding the joypad in your hand, whereas we can't race while holding a keyboard in our hands

True, but if you're not used to holding it with your hands, you'll be better with a keyboard. I think it's a matter of personal preference, although I agree that joypads are supposed to be comfortable for gaming.
