Help to suggest new car!
« on: May 04, 2016, 07:21:54 pm »
OK, here's the deal:

Less than 1 year to my beloved Alfa becoming official Youngtimer.
When that happens, car gonna be taken as joyride and hobby only, not daily car anymore...
...so suggest me new car for normal driving and daily use!

Here few points I require:

1 - Not older than 10 years (+/-1 year)
2 - FWD or AWD, not intrested in RWD yet
3 - Power over 150-170 horses, but no more than 250 horses.
4 - Engine no more than 2.0L - expencive taxes for anything over 2.0
5 - NO French (Renault, Peugeot, Citroen) - unless it is really intresting one
6 - NOTHING from VAG! - Already had few in family, don't wanna anymore!
7 - Unusual design, rare and uncommon car (sleek, smooth, sporty or aggressive)

My options so far:
- Alfa Romeo 159
- Alfa Romeo GT
- Dodge Avanger (II, sedan)
- Ford Cougar (only exception for 10 years, as last one were from 2002)
- Mazda 6 (II)
- Opel Astra TwinTop
- Toyota Celica (VII)
- Toyota Corolla (IX - Sedan)
...
...

Still got a year to go, but already started looking for, to have time to prepare and think about all options.
I'm open for Your suggestions, but please follow my 7 points, don't suggest me for example Audi A3 or something that doesn't meet my requirements.

extremally booring design, lack proper engine power (looking for 150-170, this one got only 130 or 200) but added to list, just to have as an option

for me celica looks like a car made for people who is suffering a midlife crisis. (sport shaped car for low budget)
its a ''dreamcar'' kind of car, its the car you want to have but once you buy it you get bored of it in the first month.

Alfa Romeo 159 looks very nice to be honest, for me it looks like a car made for grow up young men. (agressive looking in a daily use shape)
Ps: I dont know about the status of this car because Alfa Romeo is not a big brand in brazil, and its very rare to find an Alfa where i live.

2. Not expirienced enough to care at RWD , also I need often to hillclimb in winter or rain. I'm bit affraid of fishtailing yet.
3. Alfa had 90 horses, now wanna update to something from 150-170, don't wanna already powerful beast with over 200 horsepower. I'm not expirienced enough to handle that power, and knowing myself, it would be too tempting, so for my own safety, don't wanna more.
4. Expencive taxes for anything over 2.0 L in Poland

Difference between 170 and 200HP is too small to be recognized on stock cars cause by default non turbo engine must be heavy (Over 2000cm3) and weight over than 1500kg. Be sure AWD or 4x4 system weight also over 150kg - some even more. So doubt you will be happy with that.
Yours 90HP Alfa came without Air Condiotion,ABS and other usual stuffs what you see in cars now days but weight was 1100 Kg so that car was kinda fast and powerful. Now you have plenty of cars what on paper make 150HP from 1.2 - 1.4 engine but after just 5 years they are closer to junk yard than be driven every day in city...

Those cars what you counted, they don't belongs same class definetly so its really hard compare them. But lets try some.

Dodge Avanger - are you really sure you need that in Europe? Think about parts and proper service if plan drive car on long term.

Ford Cougar - very rare in good condition if is 2000cm/130HP known as oil eater... Engine 2.5 Duratec good but not fit yours criteria also expensive as day car... Keep on mind its 15 years old already.

Opel Astra H - Twin Top could be interesting for young man as you are but service cost lot, consumption is over than 12L petrol trust me (Got Astra Bertone similar engine) so in short period that car come unprofitable.

Corolla and Celica are good cars built by Toyota but Petrol turbo engine service costs more than double price of diesel and lot complain that diesel service is expensive... Check price of usual stuffs what you changed on your car compared with Celica's

And well isn't time to compalin about Alfa cause you are huge fan but lets just give you small advice, if car is out of warranty you have to check many things before you buy any. When car is 10 years old and often passed 300,000 some even more you see plenty of bad things and just few good on every car so don't pay just logo on metal before that be sure that car suit you and won't make you poor and hell no in grave...

After almost 20 different cars in last 14 years, last 6 months proudly driving Astra G Hatchback 5 doors 1.6 8v(euro 4). And you know why, small service cost me less than 40 euro every 7000km and consumption is 7.5L/100km pretty impressive heh...

But if you still want some smoth sportish 2000cm3 150HP car, take look on Mazda 6 2nd generation of course Petrol engine.

thx for advices.

About Astra TwinTop, it was suggested by friend. He had one, but updated to something more powerful (He got Audi S4 now) and this car (Astra), in 1.6 or 1.8 engine version indeed had fuel consumption around 8 L. I was expecting 12-14 but tourns out it is actually lower. Also checked fuel usage ratings, and almost all are around 8L average.
People also suggest me Astra, coz it got very simple mechanics. As long as nothing fucksup with opening roof, all other is fairy simple and average cheap in service.
Car got rather positive ratings and reviews, in addition share lot of parts with normal Astra, which is kinda usual car there.
Only real downside of it, is 45 L fuel tank.
I'm checking forums and other personal reviews for this car, coz it is really intresting idea.

Cougar is only loose suggestion, but after taking closer looks I m not really so enthusiastic on it.

Alfa 159 is one of cars I always wanted to have. Only big downside is, most realible version is 1.9 diesel. I'm not so fond of diesel engines.
Alfa Romeo owners usually know what they want and can take good care. So afterall bad things, there is moslty like chance Alfa can be in best possible condition. In addition many people are 'affraid' of Alfa Romeo, so finding suitable one is very easy. Many people who want to sell it, have problem to find customers.

Dodge Avanger seems odd and bad choice, but actually isn't that far as You may expect. Parts are available, service is also not so hard. Afterall it is not a Charger, yet still feels american (cheap-made) dream. Right now it is in my 5th line of choice. Also one of best ways to try American automotive, without spending crazy money, unless got another suggestion?

Corolla and Celica - the problem is with engines. Small petrol ones are not powerful. Turbo models have expencive service. They are fine, but still placed after Dodge Avanger.

Mazda 6, nice suggestion, added to list. 1 big problem with Mazda in Poland is, they are quite 'exclusive' and not many services can do them. Parts are ironically more expencive than You could suppose. Also car is quite big (not as big as Dodge, but still odly big for non-american car) Know something similar but bit shorter? 4.5 M or less?
