Discussion thread
« on: April 02, 2014, 02:54:15 pm »
Let's have a discussion about something, or have some fun. Kinda feel like nothing is happening on here these days, and the only discussion that happens is in the F1 thread and that may not appeal to everyone.

Anyone got some funny stories? Any funny jokes? How is everyone's day going and has anything interesting happened?

New interfaces on popular sites.
Youtube, twitter and now facebook.
They all do it for the worse, new layouts seem to discontinue a lot of features, and are designed for low-res screens with little width, in 2014...
They try to play the "unified interface" card, when in fact they just bring down the layout and features to mobile level and claim that now phones can do everything.
I was somewhat fine with youtube and twitter, as i mostly like changes, but the recent FB update is borderline retarded imo.

What does the new facebook layout look like? (screenshot if possible) I've heard a few people mention it but mine hasn't changed.

Also on bigger player size do you have this? it looks so stupid since YouTube changed its layout recently

the main issue is that its really narrow, i like a smaller font so more text fits on screen, and then the feed is taking like 1/5th of the screen width, but images are still relatively huge and obtrusive.

Just a short comment on the change of layouts on popular sites: They do it partially, most of the times ignoring country borders but more like "every 10th gets the new one" and wait for feedback of the people. It's also a good way of finding bugs and such before the new design hits all the people. The "new" Facebook design has been around already for 2 months (imagine the result if ALL the people on FB or ALL the people on YT would get a new design with bugs...)

Also, changing the layout of a website like FB hasn't a lot to do with "it looks better this way" (although they try to act like it). Mostly they change it to make people focus on certain things and make them click/use certain things more or less. And it has a lot to do with placement of ads. It's a way of forming the usage of your own site while maintaining user satisfaction. It's like a walk on a high rope.

I don't use adblock anymore. It slows down browsing too much, I notice a big delay in webpage loading with it on. Off is nice and fast for me.
Anyway ads don't bother me, they can be useful sometimes. I've often clicked on an ad relating to what I've been looking at and then went and bought a product.

To follow up on what nero said, FB really like A/B testing for seeing what's most effective at getting people to do things they want like add friends/post content/click ads. It'd be nice if AX did it too but I don't know if we have enough players to (quickly) get any meaningful data.

In university we had website testing as a topic and the professor told us you need at least 5.000 data sets to get anything relevant from it. Also, I would guess that direct feedback is more efficient for AX, as we don't have the user numbers or the money/time to do testing and no real need for testing (as the website isn't ad-driven).

I meant on the server, as there are things we want players to do like finish races, stay online longer, not break rules. An example might be seeing if showing the rules before registering makes rule breaking less likely. But as I suspected it would take way too long.

For the case of hostile animals the solution is simply the use of bullets. On the idea of humans being the scourge of the earth, this is something that was spread in the West to divide the western civilizations. To destroy a country from the inside out the first step is to create separatist groups, anti-racist movements in general. If you are against these movements you will be ostracized by his own country and the collective hysteria reign. If everyone had the same ideology and culture would all be more united and harmonious but is not that what the enemies of America want. The KGB and the Muslim Brotherhood are doing it and they must be fought with fire.

fortunately i have their mail box forwarded to gmail with nice interface and spam filter (which caught all of their promoted ads :L).

What about spam detection and advertisment mails?

Right now, I get one mail with a roundup of all mails which were filtered as spam (which is pretty handy cause you don't miss a mail in spamfilter). But I also get 1-2 mails/day from the service itself with (annoying) advertisment.

I use GMX right now, have been using it for nearly 10 years for everything. A switch would be a really big assload of changing mails EVERYWHERE, so I'm still not sure about it...

Re: Discussion thread

it has a decent spam filter, a "mute" function to mute spammers,
and 5 auto-configurable (+ more manually configurable) inbox tabs:
  • primary - conversations and important stuff
  • social - facebook and other junk
  • promotions - ebay, companies you subscribed to, etc
  • updates - releases, info from companies, etc
  • forums - emails regarding forums

then you can also star the mail with different "stars" and organize it even more yourself, but i never used that, so i can't explain it accurately.

the spam folder is located in the "more" option of the sidebar, and it auto-deletes 30 day old messages, but i believe that is configurable too.

my move was pretty painless, because i never actually changed my addess, just started using the new one for new accounts.

According to the internet and some russian reporter who said it, on May 9 70 years ago, Russia ran out of vodka because of wild celebrations of the defeat of the Nazis.

I wonder if that's true :L
