Unstable fps on HD 4650
« on: November 13, 2013, 08:25:29 pm »
hi, i got a litte problem

well my old good 8600GT died, so had to take spare card bro bought while ago (HD 4650)

in theory it got better specs than 860GT, but in game it is rather unstable
(8600GT 256, HD4650 1024)!

example on DoubleYou
8600GT reached 92-93 fps (/fpslimit 90) and 96 with off
HD 4650 giives olny about 70-80 there (/fpslimit 90) and same values with off
moreover, in one worlds or sk where 8600GT used to give me playable framerate (60-70) this one drops to partetic 25-35 fps :S

any ideas whats wrong with it? got any good drivers or helpful tools?

HD 4650 should be by about 50% faster, so there is definitely something wrong here.
try to get some monitoring tools, like MSI afterburner, and check is it working on normal frequency (600MHz) and are the temperatures under 85C.

Are you on windows xp or 7?

A friend of mine had the  same card and the same problem: we tried everything but it seems like old radeon cards (like 3xxx -4xxx series) have unstable fps on DirectX 9 games on win7. when he switched back to xp , his fps went normal.

ATI catalyst never was friendly to this game i could honestly say that cause since 2005 i have played on X1650,2600XT,HD3650,HD4850 and last 3 years HD6850.
Since 9.1 version till updated 13.x they didn't made much progress, ironically some options in Catalyst Center were disabled or made game total unplayedable...with low FPS,Shader or Vertical sync problems

As you said all other games runs smooth instead of just GTA:SA

On many webpages you can find similar posts to this one

Quote
I find this strange but, Catalyst 12.8 is kindoff faster than the 12.9 and 12.10?? the difference are on the FPS,,, is there anyone having this?? I have an Powercolor hd6850

Solution exist but you must be patient to find what you looking for.

Easiest way is to completely uninstall Catalyst Control Center and ATI drivers in general and give try to Omega Drivers, they run fine without MS Framework so it will use less resources on your PC which result better performance and probably decent FPS on this game.  (I am not 100% sure there is support for your model cause website has been down in moment when i checked support list)

Or if you want play with CCC drivers try some older version as 9.8, 10.3, 11.12 or some what match with your model of card...12.6 is latest designed for 4xxx series

Its been long time ago since i sold my 4850

a little bump,

what would you suggest as replacement?
keep on mind i got 400W PSU so really strong ones are out

9600/9800 or something like that would be good?
don't wanna getting lot better one, as soon (maybe next year) gonna get new computer tho.

Get a HD 6670 for the time being if you are upgrading in a year or so, it will do sa-mp at 100fps no problem.

Even birds know about G92  chip(8800/9800) ... but temperature and heavy load on PSU make me sure to not suggest you any of them.

Since you are stuck with 400W there are not many models on list, probably best is 6450 in low end budged segment - cost around 30 euro.

There are many old/used cards by same price but i am afraid your motherboard and rest of components going handle that well.

For sure 6670 is good offer as Andy said but price is higher by double if i am correct,so there comes question is it worth buying that if you plan change completely PC in short period....

if you plan on getting a 9600 GT or 9800 GT might aswell decide for GT 240 or GTS 250
If you read this you suck.

I have a similar problem, but my fps drops only in ls. I have HD 5450
For me it worked setting the affinity to single core, BUT you have to change it every time you start your game.

ok, my 2nd 8600GT died totoally.
now have HD 4650... in other games runs great but SA got strange issues

rain/smoke/dust instatly drop to like 50 fps...
generally game constatly jumps from 90 to 60 and less, but when turned v-sync ON, to plays very smooth on stable 60 fps (screen refresh 60Hz
less frames but lot smoother playing.. odd

install the fps increaser, it removes things like dust, smoke and the water spray (the spray is what causes the lag not the actual rain).

if you mean that one from post bellow, i tried it, crashes game

i have HD 5650, which is supposedly faster than yours, and i still get a lot of lag from dust etc, its probably just sa engine being bad and inefficient with old radeons.

What makes video cards to die is high temperature mixed with let the PC off by a week, when the PC stay off by long time it makes the moisture enter in the GPU and after when you on the PC and play Crysis suddenly it causes the popcorn effect, the moisture becomes steam quickly causing that:

For have GPU by long time just put double GPU fan speed and PC on everyday for avoid moisture.

i have 2nd fan on my pc, also temperature wasnt high.... it's just very long time and simply died...
PC case is also allowing pretty much for air circulation, so overheating is not to blame

SA isn't running good on older ATi graphics cards.

My HD 5450 should be able to get 90-100 FPS all the time, but it drops down to nearly unplayable once the smoke effects comes in.

My older GeForce 8400 GS is able to get such FPS.
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
GIGABYTE GA-P35-S3L
6GB DDR2 RAM
GeForce GT 730 1GB GDDR5 64-bit
Seagate Barracuda 250GB + Western Digital 320GB

not at all. 5450 is in class with the not so new intel HD's by performance.

ATI 5450 was/is(back to 2010) low budget video card which means 3D games aren't target of that model.

No matter size of memory set 512MB, 1GB or even 2GB bus type is only 64 bit what make most games unplayable , even videos on youtube lags if you try play them with HD settings.

If we talking about previous series of ATI, for sure you couldn't expect good FPS in class of 9200SE/9250 what were released in time of game, but 9600XT/9800PRO gave decent FPS.

Seriously i have no idea why all bother to play online game with hardware old 5 or more years, and whose price is 30-40 euros in total(PC) while you pay internet like half of that every month... to even browse this forum

Bottle of Coke and pizza cost you 5 euro every day
