Help Vertigo with his trip to Europe
« on: July 30, 2013, 02:08:14 pm »
Hey guys, I'm coming to visit ;_;

I'll be visiting these places:

Bangkok
Tromso
Brussels
Amsterdam
Berlin
Prague
Vienna
Budapest
Salzburg
Munich
Zurich
Venice
Rome
Pisa
Nice
Monte Carlo
Paris
Scotland
Barcelona (F1)
England
Singapore

I would like ANY advice you guys can give me.
Places to visit, things to see, other cities to visit that are close to the ones I've listed, hotel stuff, safety information etc. Anything really that could make my trip more enjoyable. I'm all ears; need all the help I can get.

I'm going March - April next year.

You're planning to travel by car or train? And a good running order would help a lot, so we know what direction you're heading!

In Berlin, buy a train ticket for 1 day or 7 days, not single ride ones. You can and will get everywhere by public transportation (mostly tram), they drive till late in the night and you can easily hop around the town all day long.

Try to avoid the biggest tourist magnets (like "Sea Life Aquarium") and discover the city yourself. There is history of the cold war and of the wall everywhere around the town. Checkpoint Charly is mandatory, the museum (http://www.mauermuseum.de/index.php/en) right next to it is interesting of you've got time for it or the weather outside is bad.

If you are interested in it, maybe consider visiting concentration camp Sachsenhausen (http://www.stiftung-bg.de/gums/en/index.htm). It is located some kilometers outside Berlin, so you'll need at least a half day for it.

Berlin to Budapest is with a tour, so I'm not sure how much spare time we will have there. I'm sure they will take us to plenty of nice places.

Thanks for the info so far!

About Venice:

You should visit Piazza San Marco(Mark's Square), where stands a beautiful cathedral and you can also find Palazzo Ducale(Ducal Palace). I'm afraid you will have to pay to go inside, but frankly, an external view it's enough ;)

You could also enjoy a ride on a steamboat that goes through the canals, which is quite suggestive, or just walk across the streets(and it's really easy to meet blind alleys), and the bridges, some of them are cool and offer some nice views.

The museum list is really long, one above all, the Peggy Guggenheim collection.

Going there in March means that you can find the Venice Carnival, which is amazing, but I think it will be at the start of the month.

Last thing for now, Venice by night is very beautiful and romantic, perfect for couples, so it's worth spending an evening there, with a good aperitif ;)

Thanks again so far.

I would like to know from any locals, or anyone who knows these cities well, which are nice areas and which areas to stay away from.
More specifically, I'd like to know nice places to find a hotel and places which I wouldn't want to stay in lol.

Norway is the most awesome country i've been in, at least nature-wise.
its expensive though, so consider being bit more economic there.

I'm not so amazed by the nature of Norway actaully, atleast not as most people are.. Actually consider ir rather boring.
Another thing you might want to have in mind while visiting Norway is that you should always have a raincoat with you when your'e out. The wheater   usually changes fast and without warnings. Good luck!

About 1/3 of the distance from Nice to Paris, there's Lyon, one of the major French cities. I have never been over there but I'd like to and from what I've heard, it's a really nice city, known to be France's "gastronomic capital". And also close to Lyon (about 50km to the East) is a small mountain city Chambéry which should be really nice.
Or if you don't mind doing a little detour via Switzerland that could be even better.

Also you might have thought about it before but if you want to save money for the trips, you can look for carpooling websites. I've used a few times a French one which had several trips across France and neighbouring countries (at least Belgium and Switzerland). If you're interested in the name of the websites about carpooling or long-distance buses and trains  for France you can just ask me.

How is that anywhere near his route lol

Btw Vertigo, how many days you stay in Amsterdam? I think if you have time a trip to The Hague might be fun, you should see Madurodam, it's NL in small. http://www.madurodam.nl/en/

For Amsterdam I'd like to suggest these things:
- Shopping: Kalverstraat (near 'de dam', where also a Palace of our king is located, as well as Madame Tussaud, a museum with famous people made from clay).
- Red Light district
- Any coffeeshop
- Do a canalboat tour, it's nice and you see a lot.
- Any musea of these: Rijksmuseum (paintings of famous painters), Van Goghmuseum, Anne Frank House, Nemo (science museum).

And things close to Amsterdam I think  are worth visiting:
- Zaandam (10km above Amsterdam, easy by bus or train), yes this is really there (and finished now):

- Madurodam (see 2nd line of this post), located in The Hague (60km, easy by train).
- Utrecht (40km by train) > Nice innercity, really old.

I hope this will help you find out what to do.

If you are going to munich, i can give you some nice tips, since i'm living in munich.

If you want to go to shopping, the munich central city is nice to go shopping, but if you want to go to some shopping centres, you can take the underground to 2 of them
For sightseeing, you can use buses from the munich central station, or some sightseeing groups, which show you every interesting spot of munich. In my mind, the most interesting place is the old city of munich, and the churches that are around that old city, but you'll see them too if you take a sightseeing bus/sightseeing group.

I hope that i helped you with that ;)

Regards

Turkey has long been considered geographically in Europe. All sports teams from Turkey participated with Europe. Even if a part is in Asia, then Russia is in the same situation.
