Nice pictures of the SR-71, also called 'Blackbird'. Main purpose was spying on the Soviet Union in the Cold War era.
Here are some interesting facts about it:
* The USA had the CIA found a fake company in order to buy large amounts of aluminium from the Soviets, because they were the only country to have such large amounts.
* When on the ground, the plane would leak large amounts of fuel. That was because the planes parts would expand in high velocity/high altitude. So the parts would only fit perfect in full operational mode at around 20 km height and Mach 2,5.
* The sensors were able to picture around 240.000 square kilometres in 1 hour flight.
* Only 30 planes were build and put into operational service.
* Though 12 planes were lost over the years, not one single plane was actually shot down by enemy fire. The plane could simply outrun every available ground-to-air missile or enemy jet by speed AND height.
* The pilot and his navigator had to wear full body suits similar to space suits to counter the effects of speed and height on the human body.
* The whole outer hull has an active fluid cooling system, the hottest spot on the plane could reach 570° C.
* It holds a lot of speed and lenght records, for example from New York to London in 1 hour and 55 minutes. And it actually had to slow down, so it could be re-fueled mid-air.
Edit:
And here is a first person review of the plane by one of its pilots: http://sploid.gizmodo.com/5511236/the-thrill-of-flying-the-sr-71-blackbird
