First unplug external hard disk to make you sure 'window blank' is not caused by that drive.

If problem is gone make sure to repair errors on external drive same as you did last time,re-plug drive on PC
open CMD
chkdsk [drive letter]: /r

Also checking viruses with some Anti virus program on internal and external drive is worth in this case

ok finally got around to doing these things. both the virus and disk check came up with nothing.

any ideas?

Then there is some service disabled but i cant guess which one.
Only solution left is re-installing windows...
