my computer window blank

hey guys,

just a couple days ago i encountered a problem.

when i click on my computer from the start menu, the window opens but then nothing loads. the green bar scrolls very slowly across the top (windows 7) but never reaches the end and the window stays blank.

i can bypass this by searching in the start menu, but even when i open for example my external hardrive through there, the files work but the thumbnails are blank.

any ideas as to what has gone wrong? i haven't installed anything but i'll probs run a viruscan tonight anyway.

obviously you tried to restart, maybe also safe mode?

and all the problems being caused by viruses is a myth ;)

when i first start my comp it works fine, somewhere along the line it fucks up.


OK so just then, i clicked on computer and it was fine. then i went into my external HDD and when that loaded, i went back to my computer and it was blank again.
clearly something wrong with my HDD? it's not very old so i cant imagine what would be wrong with it.

anyway this is what it looks like

try HDD test , i have a feeling it's  a hardware failure
