So you guys dont suggest go to the 3xxx? I have called up a couple of shops and they don't have it anymore either.

If I had to go with a 3xxx one, I'm willing to pay extra and get the 3570K, but is it worth the extra money over the 3550? I probably won't be overclocking so if it's only things like that that are the advantage then there's probably no point.

there's 100mhz ontop on both turbo and base clock, for + ~15$.
performance gain is ~2-3%, so probably not needed.

talking about the 3xxx series, they're not any worse than 2xxx, they are bit better, just they are quite much hotter, and a bit more expensive, as expected of a new generation. also motherboard price will probably be higher because of the new chipsets. if you're fine with the pricing then you can go with Ivy Bridge.

The motherboard I'm gonna go with (GB Z77M-D3H) is around the same price as the old one for some reason.

But yeah I think I'll go with the Ivy Bridge, probably the 3550, unless you think the 3570K is worth the extra money, considering I don't do anything technical except play games lol.

If you do not overclock or overclock very little, the 3550 is the way to go!

But still if you have option to buy over ebay or similar i would buy 2500k  ;)

Ok, I'll call some more shops and see if they have any 2500k in stock, otherwise I'll go with the 3550.

Thanks for all the help! Hopefully I won't need anymore lol.

Maybe we can open a sticky general computer hardware question thread? Or make this into it lol.

Heating comes with massive overclocking and Ivy isnt friendly and cool as Sandy does.
Might be you aint into overclocking stuff now but who know in year or two you decide to buy some aftermarket cooler and try little.
Chance to reach 5ghz rise with 2500k since processor is unlocked, instead of 3550/70

that's true, but also ivy @ 4.7 is about the same as sandy @ 5.0, while consuming much less power. with that being said, SB is much better overclocker indeed.

What is 'unlocking' a GPU?

I dunno but I literally no shops in my area stock the 2500k anymore so I went ahead and ordered my PC with a 3550.

What is 'unlocking' a GPU?
all cpu core frequency is calculated by this
frequency = multiplier * base clock
base clock affects many things in the cpu, not only cores, and is much faster to hit a wall that it cant go beyond while being stable.
but multiplier affects just cores, so the thing we want to overclock.
unlocked cpu can be overclocked much easier and farther, without bios changes or flashes.
in locked cpu's you mostly need to change base clock, but you can change multiplier in unlocked ones, that makes it much more easy and stable to overclock.
