R.I.P. Laptop
« on: April 28, 2012, 01:45:26 pm »
My laptop has stopped working yesterday morning :( I think it's a motherboard or power related problem... I brought it to a shop and they will look what is going on.. Problem is, I started my laptop, dos screen appeared.. screen was flickering and kept doing that.. I was unable to turn the laptop off. So I pulled out the power.. then I pulled the power back in and it refused to start.

I hope they can fix it for a good fair price.. or else I wil miss my money :'(
and cya in 1-4 weeks again.. when I get my laptop back or a new one (maybe desktop).

nope, but you really need to be technician to get the problem cause the laptop didn't do anything..

I paid 29 euro for the shop to research the problem and tell me, then I can decide if I wanna repair it or not. (depends on price)

Did you expected they test for free?Testing laptop reque unique tools thats why price is 30 euro.
Maybe in Albania 15 years old kid could test hardware for free and probably screw up other parts whille trying open laptop with knife, cause he refuse to buy tools what every servicer must have it.

does the tools brake everytime you use it? you have to buy them again everytime you use them once? lol
29 euro just to tell you what the problem is is really expensive imo, at least here, when you get the computer somewhere to get fixed, they make you pay only when the computer is fixed, they don't make you pay just for telling you what's wrong

Testing/servicing tools cost around 600-700 euro and you buy them once of course if you care how to use them.
So why somebody who bought that should test something for free?

If you already know what is damaged on laptop/pc you wont send machine in service to test for you,am i right?
So how you can say they robbing you if you don't know what is broken on PC,they doing their job and for sure you should pay them...

I wasn't arguing about paying them for fixing the computer itself, but, just for saying what's wrong...
If you have to pay them just for telling you what's wrong, then the fix itself costs how much? 300 euro? :L

I don't find it very expensive for a machine you need almost every day.. 29 euro and I know what should get fixed. People put time in my laptop and ofcourse they should get paid. I can't tell them to fix it, cause I will refuse to pay too much for 3,5 year old laptop, better buy a new one in that case.

Ok let me to explain you why you should pay them just cause they test hardware for you,for example since laptop doesnt boot up or even show any picture on monitor problem is in hardware so that is inside plastic box.
They must 'open' laptop to see closer where is problem - in 80% fault is on motherboard cause everything is small chips.
So without unique tools-instuments you are unable to find where is problem.
Well lets see situation closer guy(servicer) have to open laptop which means 10-40 screws to remove to come close enough to motherboard then he use instument 300-700 euro worth to test your laptop and put himself on risk to burn some more chip just to tell you where is problem....That least 1-3 hours depend how skilled he is.
And you expect he do that for free?

Price of 30 euro is fair enough just to tell where is problem and if is worth repairing laptop, often they are unable to fix since hardware(chipset) change every 2 year so they cant find matching chip by fair price...
Sending laptop in service on test is way better solution than giving somebody without exprience who will try fix for cheap money and probably make more damage ....

300 euro repairing is worth only on busniness class of laptops whose price is around 1000-3000 euro, models who cost 300-500 euro arent worth to repair if motherboard have to change(100+ euro)

Well, then it's pretty different here :o, you only pay when you get it fixed, and the price isn't even that high, maybe... 120 pesos, which is 20 euro aprox (ofc i'm talking about professionals, not 15 years old albanian kids :L)

You talking about laptop or desktop pc's service?
Cause there is huge difference between prices of each components.
Trust me if guy repair your laptop for 20 euro probably he just clean dust and warm a bit cause BGA reballing chip must cost 40-80 euro.
See your own eyes this cant cost 20 euro...
I think its your native language  ;)

Nah, I know what a laptop is, and yeah, it costs that, but well, money here isn't the same than there, even tough we can convert it...
I just think it's imo weird (or at least here they don't) that they make you pay only to see what it has xD

As i said any repair what cost over 100 euro isnt worth since you get only 6 month warranty....
Also keep on mind if motherboard is dead sell over ebay or similar you could easy get 100-200 extra euro on hardware what still work such as ram memory, hard disk, monitor, keyboard, battery, charger ...  ;)

Anyway next model what you have to look is Dell or similar where warrany is 3 year to avoid crap with overheating

Hm think I can find a monitor for around 130 euro. And for windows.. they sell w7 OEM for 90..

About pc.. (prices are from one shop I visit)
Memory:
Corsair Vengeance DDR3,1600-8GB KIT  - For €45, 99

Processor:
Intel Core i5-2550K, s1155 3,4 ghz for €204, 98
Intel Core i5-2500K, s1155 3,3 ghz for €196, 98
(much difference?)

GPU:
Sapphire Radeon HD7850,2GB for €212, 98
Other options:
EVGA GeForce GTX560 Ti,2GB
Sapphire Radeon HD6870,1GB for €151, 98 (budget option)

Motherboard.. not sure yet, is this good?:
Asus P8H77-V LE,s1155 for €93,99
Give some other options please.

Some questions I have:
- What power to choose? Is this good? Or too much/not enough?
- Need processor cooler? Or does it already have one included?

processor : 2500K, you can overclock it easily to ~4.0 without a doubt, most likely to about 4.7ghz
gpu: 7850, 78xx series prove to be big success - good performance, good power usage, one of the best performance/price ratio.
motherboard: any compatible, if you want to overclock a bit, then maybe bit more advanced than this, and you don't need the pci (without the -e) ports, they're not used usually.
psu: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp fill teh data there and other info, and it should recommend you.
cooler: it has one onboard, but it is small and ineffective, i suggest spending ~30eur on moderate one. If running on stock clocks you can stay with original as well tho.
memory: that's everything you need.

well, in the other hand, 6eur is too little to worry too much about it, you never know what you will try after few years, you might want to OC it once it will get close to being outdated/too old.

it held a secret bbq without me :'(

Btw I have a question...

What is better:

950 euro for intel core i5 @ 3,3 ghz, radeon HD 7850, 8 MB memory....

OR

800 euro for intel core i7 @ 3,4 Ghz, radeon HD 7570, 6 MB memory...

compare price and specs.. I have no idea, I am a bit limited on my budget, but if the upper one (self made) really is much better I am willing to spend more money. the 2nd is a pre-fab, HP, but cost way less. Tell me how you guys think about it.

7850 is high-end video card instead of 7570 which is low budget card where you will be unable to play games on full HD
6gb vs 8gb doesnt make huge difference since all games run smooth with 4gb ram - tested on my own pc
and about processor i5 or even i7 are worth only in case if you doing some video edit/programming or something where you will run all 4 cores, most games still use only 2 cores - tested on my own pc
So i find pointless buying machine with i7 no matter how rich you are.
900 euro is way too much cash even for gaming config so i would search deeper about better offer in local shops or over internet,600-700 euro would fit anything what you mind to play talking about machine without monitor or installed windows 7.

Check price of this components in NL cause they are best for cash here

Asus P8H67 B3
Intel I5-2500k
ATI Radeon HD 7850 2gb twin frozr
2x4Gb kingston hyperX 1600mhz
Seasonic SS-430GB of better
1TB hard drive
Dvd/rw
and desktop case choose on your own

Should be less than 700 euro. ;)

why twin frozr?
it seems like gigabyte's OC edition is the best deal ( +12% factory OC and 3 year warranty)

Gigabyte is great with motherboards no doubt i have one MA770T-UD3,3 years warranty all solid state capatitors dual bios ets,but about video cards i have no such great opinion or better to say they fail much in period behind us.
Am refused to suggest brand which has lot overheated or total burned chips in past 2 year, where shops send you other brand of same card such as Asus,MSI,Powercolor... in warranty period cause they know Gigabyte models wont least 3 years as warranty says.
To be honest i was nearly close to buy 6850 by Gigabyte cause heatsink looks masive and silent,3 years warranty looks great but when i read plenty of bad reviews about card i went in MSI squad...
Now days they trying earn new customers in their squad with 3 years warranty and overclocked core clocks which is good offer but still i find that tricky...
No doubt one day Gigabyte will take lead position of Asus but at this moment i find Asus,Sapphire or MSI for better models of 7850  ;)

sounds like a good pc, fair price (I do not overclock).. but one question remains, is the 430 Watt power supply sufficient? (I know it will be sufficient, but I saw at many sites with pcs like that having 500 or 600 watt power supply, that is why I doubt)

450 watt aren't enough imho.

650 watt are ok.

it is enough, else they won't sell it that way. but I am not sure how that works out on the longterm. or when pushing machine to the limit (doing a lot of stuff at the same time)

mATX is smaller motherboard, which means it is compressed together and focused rather on size than performance, and can lack some features too.
it doesn't necessarily mean its bad, but ATX form factor motherboards will be better in general.

as a not overclocker, mATX wouldn't make much difference, but they offering it as a gaming pc is not right.

Micro ATX are often cheap and integrated motherboards, what is good offer only in case if you mind to prepare office-Low budget PC,never for pure gaming or even something what cost 700 euro....
Same goes with idea to put 430w PSU to run 6870

I finally got my new pc.. but it has 2 problems.

one: my VGA doesn't work?? I am now using my HDMI output(TV).. I have no idea why it doesnt work but my pc doesnt find the monitor..

two: when my tv is on 1920 x 1080 (full hd) I have parts that I can't see of the edges of my desktop.

Any help? And btw: shop is closed now.. so I can't return atm.. will do tomorrow if I dont find the problem.

did you plug vga into the video cards connector, not motherboards one?
also make sure correct resolution is set in windows settings.

I have my monitor on the VGA in the motherboard. Also HDMI in the motherboard doesn't work (tried it on tv) and.. the HDMI in the GPU does work.

I use windows 7. (if that matters)

it isn't supposed to work, you need dvi to vga connector then.
videocard can only output signal to own connectors, not mother board.
either invest for full hd dvi monitor, or get connector.

and for the resolution, go to desktop/rightclick/screen resolution and make sure its correct there

Ok nobody ever told me that xD I have a DVI entrance in the monitor so I can just buy a dvi-cable.

Does it matter what cable I buy? I have  DVI-I dual link entrance in the GPU.

And resolution problems.. no idea. I have it on 1920 x 1080.. but it misses the edges.. and if I try to put that through Catalyst center it gives me the same problem.. even on 720p..

My monitor only has DVI-D (dual link).. what cable to connect that to DVI-I?

you may try it, male DVI-D should go into female DVI-I (not a dirty joke, that's valid term) according to wiki.
Quote
Many flat panel LCD monitors have only the DVI-D connection so that a DVI-D male to DVI-D male cable will suffice when connecting the monitor to a computer's DVI-I female connector.
