Virtualdub is often usen when you have a movie and wants to increase quality and smoothness then later on add it to vegas to make it smaller size

That's because you've saved your video file as the "uncompressed" (that's the default setting in the programm). In the upper menu press Video, then Compression. Choose the compressor from the list, for example WMV 9 or DivX, then press Configure and mess with the settings a bit. (Article with the pictures)
