48÷2(9+3) = 2 or 288

( ) First. So 9+3 = 12. This is still between ( ), so you do 2 * 12 = 24. Then 48/24 = 2.

And the wrong way:
48/2 = 24, then * (12) = 288.

You always need to calculate the ( ) first, then / or * and after that + and -. That is why the second answer is wrong imo.

Was gonna vote 288, then reminded myself that you have to open the brackets first. Rule says so.

48/2(9+3) = 48/2*(9+3) = 24*12= 288

/ * are equal according to priority order

to make 2 it's 48/(2(9+3)) =>  more  ()  to force priority to the invisible * (of 2*(9+3) )

288 is the correct answer. multiplying and dividing are equal, so you divide 48/2 1st because its infront

i think this way:

48(9+3)/2=(48*12)/2=288
48/2(9+3)=48/(2*12)=2
48/2(9+3)≠48(9+3)/2
So, the answer is 2.

Btw nice thread crom :D

48÷2 * (9+3) =
24 * 12 = 288 (real answer)

if the answer is 2 then it has to be like

48 / ((9+3) * 2) =
48 / 12 * 2 =
48 / 24 = 2

same thing with 5 - (2+3)

if we calculate 5 - (2+3) equals 0

but if we remove quotes () it will be 5-2+3 which equals 6

hope i cleared it up

order of operations!

i've seen quite a few of these on facebook mostly with something like 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 x 0 having 0 as the most popular answer "cos anything times 0 is 0!" which is true but you do multiplication/division before subtraction/addition so you do 5 x 0 first THEN the rest. and if that's too tough for you just use wolfram alpha :L

the parenthesis are already  * or  x   .    eg:  2(5)=10

48/2(9+3)= X
48/2(12) = X
48/24 = X
2 = X

X=2

Why are you guys putting number 12 into brackets after adding numbers. There is not point in it I guessss? That's why you give the wrong answers.

A common technique for remembering the order of operations is the abbreviation "PEMDAS", which is turned into the phrase "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally". It stands for "Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction". This tells you the ranks of the operations: Parentheses outrank exponents, which outrank multiplication and division (but multiplication and division are at the same rank), and these two outrank addition and subtraction (which are together on the bottom rank). When you have a bunch of operations of the same rank, you just operate from left to right.

288.
