not such a big fail, yes its disgusting for us humans but animals tend to eat their own excrement(most usually) and others(less usual) when they detect the digestion process did not fully process the food ingested, if you have a hamster or guinea pig you can verify this yourself by watching them when they poop, most of the time they just leave it there or throw it away but sometimes you can see them put that poop in the begining of the process again
