You don't have to, if you press the YouTube logo in the top-left corner you can bypass it. It is annoying because it will come up every time you log in though.

I guess Google don't want to operate two ID systems and can't just transfer over YT accounts as there will probably already be users with those names.

I got a mail that I had to activate my google account, but my YouTube account is alraedy working.. does this ever expire? And what will be the consequences, deleted YT account? Hate if I get forced to do something a nerd of Google wants.

I think it's to prevent spam, and help Google track you.

To make a Google account these days you need to provide a working phone number, so they can track you down.
