Gang wars are pointless, even for the gangs: they waste resources, attract police attention, make it harder to sell drugs and make the streets more dangerous. I suppose that's the problem when your labour force is uneducated teenagers with raging hormones and a feeling they have entitlement to some sort of "respect."

There are two things you need to do to understand this sort of American gang problem: watch The Wire and read Freakonomics. It's quite interesting when you realise that the drug dealing set-up perfectly mimics corporate America. The people on top get paid a huge amount of money, the next level of management works for a reasonable salary, the level below them works minimum wage hoping to make their way up the chain...but below them there are thousands of kids willing to do favours for free just to get recogntion. This bottom level is where most problems happen because they misunderstand the importance business, think everything is about maintaining the gang's status and hence get into all this "dissing" mess.
