You can already use FREE dedicated servers for l4d, you just need to enter a few things in the console first (which you need to enable in the settings)

2 ways to do it :

hashmpukl4d servers : just type "sv_search_key hashmpukl4d" in the console, and then just start the game.
Me and some friends have been playing on these servers for ages, they work well, great pings depending how far from the server you live.

multiplay servers : in the console, "openserverbrowser", right click on a multiplay server in the history tab, click "show server info", copy the ip and type "mm_dedicated_force_servers ip:port"

I've tried browsing for free servers using the openserverbrowser but there never seems to be any with 8 free slots.
