You can already use FREE dedicated servers for l4d, you just need to enter a few things in the console first (which you need to enable in the settings)

2 ways to do it :

hashmpukl4d servers : just type "sv_search_key hashmpukl4d" in the console, and then just start the game.
Me and some friends have been playing on these servers for ages, they work well, great pings depending how far from the server you live.

multiplay servers : in the console, "openserverbrowser", right click on a multiplay server in the history tab, click "show server info", copy the ip and type "mm_dedicated_force_servers ip:port"

I've tried browsing for free servers using the openserverbrowser but there never seems to be any with 8 free slots.

L4D2 is a fair bit better, but everyone has the first, so go with that.

Could you name the biggest differences between L4D and L4D2?

5 new campaigns, 4 new survivers, 3 new infected, melee weapons and a lot more new guns instead of the measly 5 L4D has, lack of variety in weapons always annoyed me in the original, a new grenade type, new ammo types ( incendiary and explosive) 5 new campaigns, new gamemodes. It's a great improvement thb, nothing at all wrong with L4D though, I still like playing it.
